For Caroline Battles, leadership has never been about titles. It has always been about solving problems, bringing people together, and leaving every organization better than she found it.
That purpose has guided a career spanning government, politics, public policy, philanthropy, and healthcare. Early on, Caroline envisioned a future in law and politics, driven by a strong sense of justice and a desire to make meaningful change. After working on local and national political campaigns, serving in the Missouri Governor's Office, and leading in a U.S. Senate office, she discovered that the work she loved most centered on improving people's lives through influence and advocacy. Her chapter in government ended with the opportunity of a lifetime, serving as Chief of Staff to a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, where she had a front-row seat to the passage of the Affordable Care Act among many other landmark moments in public policy.
That passion naturally led her into healthcare, where she has spent more than a decade helping shape policy, strengthen communities, and guide large, mission-driven organizations. Today, Caroline serves as Chief Administrative Officer for SSM Health, working closely with the Board of Directors and overseeing marketing, communications, advocacy, and public affairs for the enterprise. She describes herself as a "silo buster”: someone who enjoys connecting people, functions, and ideas to solve complex challenges collaboratively.
Throughout every stage of her career, one principle has remained constant: creating positive change. Whether advocating for healthcare access and a health system that works for all, navigating organizational transformation, or collaborating with her executive peers to shape strategy and advance organizational priorities, Caroline is motivated by work that improves systems and serves people.
Outside the office, relationships take center stage. She values time with family and close friends, cheering from the sidelines of her son's soccer games, participating in a book club, and helping her husband with his ever-growing beekeeping hobby. Staying active is another important part of her routine, with strength training providing both physical wellness and mental clarity.
Although her schedule is demanding, Caroline believes making time for connection is essential. Her advice is simple: step away from your desk, invest in relationships, and make room for meaningful conversations. It's a philosophy that aligns perfectly with the spirit of the St. Louis Forum and one she hopes to practice even more herself.
Whether she's leading strategic initiatives across a healthcare system or encouraging collaboration among colleagues, Caroline approaches every opportunity with curiosity, optimism, and a belief that the best solutions are built together.
